The Hiawatha Hunting & Fishing Club is one of many clubs that own large tracts of land in the Poconos, Pennsylvania. Through innovative work with Open Space Institute, the hunting club is conserving its 1,300-acre property in the forested headwaters of the Delaware River Basin, helping to ensure clean water for downstream residents. And, the use of carbon credits may provide a model for how to finance conservation in an era of shrinking public dollars for land protection.
